"Palos Verdes Resident since 1947"

March 2016 Newsletter

March, 2016

Dear Neighbor:

As predicted, after a slower last half of 2015, the market picked right up after the first of the year.  2 reasons:   one is that it normally does this, since people put off buying and selling over the holidays, then hit the market right after the New Year; the other reason is that the pundits who claim to understand these things predicted that interest rates were finally going to go up, so buyers didn’t want to miss that.  Of course, they’ve come back down in the meantime.

So naturally the houses I talked about last time as my new listings have all sold – 2737 Via La Selva, 1329 Granvia Altamira, and 2201 Paseo Del Mar, all in PVE, plus 24 Packet Rd, RPV.  I have a new listing coming up off Armaga Spring Rd – 4 bedroom 3 baths on a huge flat lot, as well as a cosmetic fixer in a great Montemalaga location, so give me a call if you’re looking.  I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but I belong to a small, select, invitation only group of the top agents on the Hill.  We meet in a clandestine, smoke filled room (smoke is crucial) every Thursday morning to share listings that we have coming up.  As a result, my listings have sort of a head start, and I am privy to other listings that most realtors won’t know about for a week or two.  This has worked out well for many of my clients.

On Wednesday, March 23, I will be giving a lecture entitled “Real Estate Myths and Realities” to the Peninsula Seniors – 10:30 am at Hesse Park.  After over 31 years of doing this, I’ve run into a lot of misconceptions and bad advice that I will set straight.  It will take about an hour, unless more myths show up before then.

Here’s the PV history tidbit for this month:  did you know that there used to be a prison in Palos Verdes?  Yep, in the early 1950’s, about where CVS Drugs is now, there used to be what was called an Honor Farm – a sort of minimum security prison.  We lived at 4205 Via Pinzon at the time, and going up newly completed Silver Spur Road, thru that valley (no Peninsula Center yet), past the prison, behind the Gates, and down Portuguese Bend Road was how we got to my sister’s piano lessons on Narcissa Drive.  In those pre-landslide days Portuguese Bend Road connected to Narcissa.  The prisoners were working on extending Crenshaw down to PV Drive South.  Of course it was that project that was thought at the time to have set the slide in motion – seems like it began to slide in 1955 – and the prison was closed.
